Agriculture
Agriculture is the leading industry in Southside Virginia. This region grows all of the state's flue-cured tobacco, and produce a significant amount of Virginia's beef, dairy and poultry supply. Southside is also a leader in the production of hogs, wheat, hay, corn, and soybeans. Greensville County has 134 farms. About 1,600 head of cattle are raised here. A smattering of farms raise milk cows, hogs, sheep and poultry. Corn, wheat, tobacco, soybeans, cotton and peanuts are grown here. More than 827,000 pounds of tobacco and 17.6 million pounds of peanuts are produced annually. Hay acreage is about 1,100. Cotton is grown on 11,500 acres.
