Emporia-Greensville Animal Shelter

Adopt-A-Pet from the Emporia/Greensville Animal Shelter today.  There is no cost to adopt a dog or cat, but you must bear the cost to spay or neuter your new pet.  If you would like to adopt-a-pet, contact the Animal Control Officer at 634-3609.

The Board of Supervisors has adopted local ordinances that parallel  state laws governing the licensing of dogs, the appointment of animal wardens, the disposition of dogs that kill or injure livestock or poultry, disposal of dead dogs, and other miscellaneous provisions controlling animals.

State laws governing the control of domestic animals, and all related local ordinances, are enforced by an animal warden appointed by the Board of Supervisors. The Board may appoint one or more deputy wardens to assist the animal warden. The compensation of the warden and deputies is set by the board of supervisors. A county having an animal warden may contract with neighboring jurisdictions for enforcement of the dog laws. The contract may provide that the locality employing the animal warden be reimbursed a portion of the salary and expenses of the warden and any deputies.

Animal wardens, animal custodians, and animal control officers who operate a pound are required to have knowledge of the laws governing the care of animals and to take at least one training course on animal laws and care. The state bears the expense of the course, if it is approved by the state veterinarian.

All dogs four months of age or older must be vaccinated and licensed. The Board of Supervisors imposes an annual license tax by ordinance and may establish different rates of taxation, within certain limits, for the ownership of male and female dogs, and spayed or neutered dogs. License taxes may not be levied on guide dogs for the blind or on hearing dogs for hearing impaired persons.

In addition, the Board is required to maintain a dog pound or enclosure in accordance with guidelines established by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The Animal Shelter is located off of Sunnyside Road just pass the Emporia Industrial Park.  The Animal Shelter has an adopt-a-pet program which allows people to adopt-a-pet from the shelter for free as long as they provide proof of the animals spay or neutering of  the animals.

Recognizing a need, a group of concerned people have recently formed the Emporia Greensville Humane Society, LLC to answer and assist in providing solutions to the needs of the Emporia-Greensville Animal Shelter, the animals of the county and city, and the resident owners who need education and assistance in becoming and remaining compliant to local and state codes. The Society’s other priorities include providing education regarding local licensing requirements and general animal care and preventing animal abuse.

Members of the Humane Society are volunteers who assist County Animal Control Officer John Mise and City Animal Control Officer Joey Turner with keeping the facility clean, adopting animals, and securing needed medical treatment and items the animals need.

To this end the Emporia Greensville Humane Society holds Adopt-a-pet days on Saturdays from 12 noon to 3 p.m. at both the Wal-Mart and at the animal shelter on Reese Street in Emporia .  Available for adoption will be puppies, kittens, adult dogs and cats.  The adoption fees are $60 for a dog or puppy and $50 for a cat or kitten. The fee covers the spay or neuter of the animal and in the case of canines, some vaccinations.

The Society’s other priorities include providing education regarding local licensing requirements in general animal care.  The Society is also deeply committed to preventing animal abuse.

The Humane Society asks that you help them help the animals by making donations which will help to cover medical costs of some of the animals, improving the shelter for the animals living there, and looking toward future expansion of the facility to better serve both the public and the animals.  A memorial fund has also begun for those who wish to give in memory of a beloved pet or person. Those funds will go to purchase needed items for the shelter and will be recognized with a memorial plaque.  The Society expresses sincere gratitude to those who have already and continue to do so.

For more information on becoming a volunteer or making a donation or adoption, please call Peggy Malone at (434) 634-3413 or Debbie Broughton at (434) 634-4153.
